The lobby of the Vero Centre is both an artwork itself, and a vessel for arguably one of the best publicly accessible collection of contemporary New Zealand art outside an art gallery. The art form of the lobby is clearly stated in the statuesque architectural features. Structural columns are sculpted with a large circular base progressing to the ceiling level, conveying the impression that they support the weight of the building above. The lifts are housed in a monumental tapered cone, which is laminated with wooden panels sliced to reveal the spectacular end-grain. In contrast, the concierge desk stands as a vision of glass and light. Clear frameless glass forms the exterior walls, blurring the distinction between indoors and outdoors, and between lobby and street. Sculptural outdoor furniture mirrors the design and scale of the internal leather chairs; wooden decking and extensive native planting recreates a sense of comfort and familiarity.
